Painting
Can You Paint Over Dark Colours?
Painting over dark colours is absolutely possible, but it often takes more than simply applying one lighter coat on top. The depth of the existing colour and the surface condition both affect the process.
Section 1
Why dark colours are harder to cover
Deep colours often show through lighter shades unless the system is built up properly. Some colour changes need extra coats or a better base layer to achieve an even result.
Section 2
The role of preparation and base coats
A suitable base or undercoat can improve coverage and reduce patchiness. This is especially helpful when moving from very strong colours to light neutrals.
Section 3
Why one coat is rarely enough
Even if the new paint claims high coverage, dramatic colour changes often need two or more coats to look consistent. Rushing the job tends to leave patchy or uneven results.
Section 4
When professional decorating helps
Large colour changes can be one of the easier ways to end up with flashing, roller marks, or poor coverage if the process is rushed. A decorator can plan the right system from the start.
