Preparation

Do You Need to Prime Before Painting?

Primer is not always needed on every job, but in the right situations it makes a major difference. It can improve adhesion, reduce patchiness, and help create a more even final finish.

Section 1

When primer is essential

New plaster, bare timber, repairs, stained surfaces, and some difficult substrates often benefit from priming before painting. Without it, finish coats may absorb unevenly or fail to perform properly.

Section 2

When repainting may not need it

If a surface is already sound, clean, and previously painted with a compatible coating, full priming may not always be necessary. The condition of the existing finish is what matters.

Section 3

Primer vs undercoat

Primer and undercoat are not the same thing. Primer helps prepare the surface, while undercoat helps build a base for the finish coat, especially on woodwork and stronger colour changes.

Section 4

Why skipping it can backfire

Missing the right preparation coat can lead to flashing, peeling, poor coverage, or an uneven appearance. It may seem like a shortcut at first but often creates more work later.
