How to Prepare Walls for Painting

Preparation is one of the most important parts of painting. Even the best paint will struggle to look good on a surface that is dirty, damaged, or uneven. Proper prep is what gives decorating a clean and professional finish.

Section 1

Cleaning the surface

Walls should be free from dust, grease, and loose material before any painting starts. Dirt and residue can affect how well paint adheres and may lead to an uneven result.

Section 2

Filling cracks and imperfections

Small dents, cracks, and holes should be filled and allowed to dry fully before sanding. Leaving surface damage visible will often show through the final coats, especially in stronger light.

Section 3

Sanding and smoothing

Sanding helps level filled areas and removes rough patches or flaking material. The aim is not just to make the wall look flat, but to make sure it feels consistent across the whole surface.

Section 4

When primer is needed

Primer is often useful on repaired areas, stained surfaces, or new plaster. It helps create a stable base for the top coats and can improve both durability and finish quality.
