Paint Finishes Explained

Different paint finishes affect both the look and durability of a room. Choosing the right finish depends on the room itself, the surface being painted, and how much wear and cleaning it will need to handle.

Section 1

Matt finish

Matt paint gives a soft, low-sheen look that is popular in modern interiors. It is especially useful on walls where you want to reduce glare and hide minor imperfections in the surface.

Section 2

Eggshell and satin

Eggshell and satin finishes have a slight sheen and are usually easier to clean than matt paint. They are often used on woodwork, trims, and walls in areas that get a bit more traffic.

Section 3

Gloss finish

Gloss is more reflective and very durable, which makes it useful for some woodwork and high-contact surfaces. Because it reflects light more strongly, it tends to show imperfections more clearly, so preparation matters even more.

Section 4

Choosing the right finish

There is no single best finish for every room. A decorator will usually choose based on durability, appearance, lighting, and how heavily the room is used. Matching the finish to the room makes a big difference to the final result.
