Preparation

Should You Paint Over Old Wallpaper?

Painting over wallpaper can sometimes work, but it is rarely the best long-term solution unless the wallpaper is firmly fixed and in very good condition. The right approach depends on the wall and the paper itself.

Section 1

When painting over wallpaper may be possible

If the wallpaper is secure, smooth, and free from bubbling or peeling, painting over it can sometimes be done. Even then, it still needs proper cleaning and preparation first.

Section 2

Why it often causes problems

Wallpaper seams, texture, trapped air, and hidden damage often show through paint. Moisture in the paint can also loosen the adhesive and lead to lifting.

Section 3

Why removal is usually better

Removing wallpaper gives a cleaner starting point and allows the surface underneath to be repaired properly. That generally leads to a better and more durable final finish.

Section 4

When to get advice first

If the wallpaper is very old, heavily textured, or covering damaged walls, it is worth assessing the surface before choosing a direction. Rushing this stage often creates more work later.
